I started commenting on the YouTube page for FFXV’s Dawn trailer as a reaction to what I thought was a beautiful and nuanced teaser trailer and I thought those comments would just go away; washed clean by a sea of impatient, vitriolic fanboy haterade. Somewhat understandable, given how long people have been waiting for the game.
I was mistaken…
Instead people have since been overwhelmingly positive, and my comment has become a magnet for intelligent, emotional responses. It’s nice when love wins the day, isn’t it?
I had to come back to The Inu (truly my home in these interwbes) if only to share this extensive and lively interview I did with GABRIEL KNIGHT creator and legendary game designer Jane Jensen. Jane was one of my heroes growing up and although she didn’t make it into my wedding vows like Richard Garriot’s Lord British, she’s somewhere in the top 10 also rans. GK had a profound effect on me and as I note in the interview, I think the entertainment world has finally, twenty years after the fact, caught up to its pervasive sense of dread.
Definitely check out the 20th Anniversary Edition of GABRIEL KNIGHT: SINS OF THE FATHERS when it drops on October 15th. I was pretty impressed with Day 1 and 2 in the preview build. I’ll have a full review up at This Is Infamous in the coming weeks.
Ah, I miss this place. Maybe I’ll hang around for a bit?
I really like horror movies but I hate haunted houses where people chase you. OUTLAST is a video game, and one I thoroughly enjoyed no less, but it is also one damn scary haunted house. I did a full review on This Is Infamous detailing the bowel movements I had in my pants thanks to this creepy asylum. Play it late at night. Play it in the dark. Play it with the volume cranked. Oh and buy some adult diapers, it’s less messy.
I wrote up a review of TOMB RAIDER: DEFINITIVE EDITION for the PS4. The improvements are awesome and I’m even more in love with that psychopath, Lara Croft and her kissable lips. Did I say that last part out loud?
I finally finished my review of ASSASSIN’S CREED IV: BLACK FLAG for This Is Infamous. I say “finally” because I beat the game with 98% completion and it took me a lifetime. I would also add that I just breezed through the Aveline side story, which was fun if not especially interesting. I expect much more from the FREEDOM CRY DLC which I plan to tackle this week.
My review of the PS4 indie puzzle game, TINY BRAINS is up over at This Is Infamous. An excerpt:
There’s a formula which is essential to the enjoyment of Spearhead Games’ four player indie co-op puzzle action game, TINY BRAINS. It goes like so:
You + A Free Saturday Afternoon + Tiny Brains + 1 or more friends on a couch = CRAZY FUN.
Deviate at all from that formula and you risk downgrading to SORTA FUN or PASSABLY FUN.
We dug it (AND YOU SHOULD TOO!)
I have been consumed by Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. Such that I literally played myself sick, and was told to get bed rest. You’d think that would be a story from my first play through but actually it was from my 3rd, on Hard’s New Game +. It’s not a perfect game. There’s plenty that could’ve been technically improved upon and I detailed, what I found to be, the most glaring flaw in an editorial for This Is Infamous called THE LAST BOSS OF US. However, it just may be my perfect game. This motherfucker doesn’t quit.
Beyond the story which is wonderful and the setting which is awe-inspiring there’s white knuckle tension that hangs over every encounter. The lack of supplies on Hard, has so far made every searched drawer a life or death struggle. Searching a drawer could mean the difference between victory and defeat. Pardon me, but that’s fucking impressive. Plus, the fisticuffs… it’s brutal. There is nothing like running through gunfire and swinging a steel pipe wildly at a man. The moment metal connects to skull is sickeningly beautiful.
Another great detail that should convince you to buy a PS3 just to play this is the way they handle first aid. This isn’t Uncharted where your vitality recovers if you stay away from bullets for a spell, you get shot and you get hurt and to recover you need some time away to tend to your wounds -no instahealing. In otherwords, you are fucked if you get cornered. Playing it smart isn’t just some goofy notion in this game, it’s everything. Run n’ gun is literally the worst option in almost every situation and that makes it all the more thrilling. I haven’t even tried multiplayer yet but I’m dying to.
Also, holy shit the mushroom zombies are freaky in the best way possible. What is up with freaky mushrooms this year. First Hannibal now this?
I was working on a prototype for a new series of pop culture video blips when Roger stepped in and asked to host them at Tainted Reality. The term “crash cuts” refers to when your video editing amounts to recording each new shot straight to tape as you intend the audience to view it. It’s frowned upon which makes it funny and edgy to me. It’s what they do in Be Kind Rewind and I love that movie. This episode may as well be called MTV Real Life: I was a middle-aged vocaloid. Enjoy.
