I like how the word “album” has stuck around even though in this day and age you’re more likely buying CDs or groupings of mp3s. The word has a warmth that other snazzier labels fail to encapsulate. Bearing that in mind, I think no record this year was more album-like than She & Him’s relaxed debut Volume One which Paste magazine just named the best album of 2008.
And there’s good news for those of us who loved She & Him’s first album and were not particularly impressed with The Happening
“I would rather be a songwriter than be an actor,” she (Zooey) says. “I’m grateful I’ve been so fortunate to have success as an actor, but being a songwriter is just creatively so satisfying.
If you haven’t checked out their record and you’re a fan of retro pop. She & Him will feed your need for Linda Ronstadt, Torch songs, and mopey Beatles covers. Volume 2 should be out next year.
If you haven’t seen the video for their single Why Do You Let Me Stay Here, do check it out. If you’ve only ever heard them, this may slightly alter your perception of them to say the least. Definitely the coolest music video I watched this year.
