Been having a blast with Penny Arcade Adventures’ On the Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode Two. Been having fun even saying the name of the game. I dug the first episode’s Krondorian turn based limited resource battle mechanics and Lovecraftian steampunk setting. Ep. 2 is more of the same, only better. Remember way back when how I talked about Breath and Air as concepts to creating immersive virtual worlds. This game has that in abundance.
Not only are the locales more fleshed out this time, but there are some nice graphical surprises in the form of Lightning striking nearby trees, A giant fruit fucking robot doing his best to penetrate a giant steel orange. And this all happens in game as you’re just strolling about. They still have some way to go to even live up to Final Fight standards (just why are all these people standing around doing fuck all?) but they’re starting to really draw me in to this very very odd world where wealthy matrons gild their precious pups in solid gold and deranged orderlies are very particular about their nail care.
I haven’t even spoken about the combat which is intuitive and addicting. Who knew that adding a block button to the Final Fantasy turn based drama would make things so exciting? Speaking of which, the humorous names of the attacks the enemies throw at you is again, a highlight.
When the rich gadabout attacks with a laser beam called “Monokill.”
