Add Nicole Kidman as Margot in Noam Baumbach’s Margot at the Wedding to my list of damaged, fucked up chicks who enthrall me (i.e. something dirty). Ever since I saw her as a murderess in To Die For I’ve kind of had a thing for Nicole Kidman but she’s never really lived up to her great potential. That all changed when I saw the bleak and lovingly unsatisfying Margot at the Wedding in which she plays a needy New York writer who is a somewhat intentional asshole. Watching Margot scramble up a tree in response to her sister’s goading or berate a hick couple for abusing their child is bizarrely sexy. I even like that she drops her American accent and slips into her native Aussie during a pivotal bedroom scene.
Before you cast me into the crazy pit and throw away the key let me explain that it’s not the fucked up part that attracts me to these performances, it’s the vulnerability which reveals innocence or perhaps naivety.
Nicole joins Helena Bonham Carter for Fight Club, Audrey Tatou for Amelie, fellow Aussie Naomi Watts for King Kong (2005), and Jennifer Connely (the queen of damaged, fucked up chick performances) for The House of Sand and Fog, The Hulk, Dark Water and the ultimate damaged chick performance Requiem for a Dream on my short list.
